It’s possible to improve

your relationships, become more

assertive, and feel a greater sense of

personal control in your life.

Be Your Best, or B.Y.B., is a nine-week course in personal

effectiveness for any person or couple who wants to learn

key skills that empower them to identify and take

responsibility for meeting important personal needs, to

communicate their needs, feelings, and ideas in a clear and

direct way, and to resolve interpersonal conflicts by using a

method that allows everyone to win.

In B.Y.B., you’ll learn:

  • How to use the Behavior Window to identify who owns

    a given problem

  • How to apply different communication skills for different situations, and “gear switch” between them to maintain relationship balance during confrontation

  • What to do when another person’s behavior interferes

with you meeting your own needs; how to manage

strong feelings, including anger, and turn them into Confrontive I-Messages

If you struggle with anxiety, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand the important connection between

    anxiety and effectiveness

  • Learn to view anxiety in a positive way and take steps

to respond differently to its presence in your life

  • Reduce feelings of overwhelming anxiety to more useful

levels so you can take action

For new ways of managing conflict, you’ll learn:

  • Working definitions of “power” and “resources” as they apply to conflict in relationship

  • A method for resolving conflict in a way that does not involve the use of power and that creates original, lasting solutions. In conflicts of needs where one person usually wins or loses, B.Y.B. offers an alternative in the form of win-win conflict resolution, or Method III

  • How to handle values collisions in relationships

If you often feel responsible for others, you’ll learn:

  • How to listen effectively in order to be a helping agent

when someone you know has a problem

  • How Active Listening allows others to take

responsibility for solving their own problems

You’ll also learn:

  • How to identify goals that fulfill your wants and needs,

and how to plan effectively in order to reach them!

B.Y.B. incorporates the same skills as P.E.T., Parent Effectiveness Training, but it differs in that there is an emphasis on individual needs and goals, learning to

communicate in ways that are assertive (instead of nonassertive or aggressive) and how to clearly say “yes” or “no” to requests from others. Self-disclosure and personal

responsibility is up front in B.Y.B., making it a good fit for

individuals, small business owners, and graduates of P.E.T. who want to focus on themselves as individuals.

I also encourage writers, artists, and creative folk to consider this course, because the skills in Active Listening and problem-solving changed my relationship to my own creative work in a positive way. These skills bring sharpness and clarity to any creative process.

The course tuition is $375 per person (which includes the

$330 tuition plus a $45 materials fee). For online classes, I will physically mail the textbook and workbook to you in advance of the class start date.

Thanks to the lovely people who donate to a fund I maintain to “pay it forward,” I’m able to offer tuition on a sliding scale. You can donate to the Sponsored Seat fund or apply for reduced tuition here.
